They Claim that We're Violent.......

On crime and gentrification

It is easy to get the impression that America--and black communities in particular--are more violent than ever. We are regularly treated to gruesome crime stories on television news programs, and they often feature black perpetrators. When we are not watching the news, Law and Order, CSI, NCIS and other crime dramas fill our minds with murder and mayhem. When we go to the movies or play video games, the smorgasbord of crime and violence continues.

But contrary to popular perception, American crimes rates--including crime rates in black communities--are at historically low levels. What we see on television and movie screens is a very, very distorted picture of reality. Lori Dorfman of the Berkeley Media Studies Group finds [PDF] that the "news media report crime, especially violent crime, out of proportion to its actual occurrence." Further, she adds, "the proportion of crime committed by people of color (usually African Americans) is over-reported."

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has recently reported that its preliminary estimate for violent crime in 2009 was down 4.4 percent from 2008. The FBI data shows that violent crime rate has declined fairly steadily since 1991. Crime stories sell, so more and more companies--including news networks--are selling crime stories. But the increase in crime stories is not matched by a real increase in crime.

The FBI data is based on reports from participating law enforcement agencies. Not every crime is reported to the police however. The National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) is a better source for overall crime trends. This survey too shows a strong downward trend.

Examining NCVS violent crime data from 1973 to 2007, one sees that the peak year for violent crime among blacks was 1981--nearly three decades ago. The black violent crime victimization rate fluctuated from then until 1993. Since 1993, the violent crime rate in black communities has declined by 70 percent! White communities experienced a similar decline--68 percent.

Although on average white communities continue to be safer than black communities, many black communities today are safer than white communities were in the 1970s and 1980s. The violent crime victimization rate for blacks in 2007 was 10.3 per 1,000 persons. In the 1970s, the victimization rate for whites averaged 19.5 per 1,000 persons--nearly twice the 2007 black rate.

I believe that one consequence of the fact many black communities are much safer today than in the past is gentrification. The New York Times recently reported that blacks are no longer the majority in Harlem. Gentrification of black neighborhoods has occurred across the country. I've seen it in Brooklyn, in Chicago, in D.C. and have heard of it occurring in many other cities.

Rents and homes in these black neighborhoods have always been less expensive than in similar white neighborhoods. What has changed was that over the 1990s and into the 2000s these neighborhoods have become much safer, as safe as or safer than many white neighborhoods were in the 1970s and 1980s. Relatively safe neighborhoods and lower rents = gentrification.

Of course, the national crime trends can differ significantly from local trends. Further, no violence is trivial, and black communities can and should still be much safer than they are today. With these caveats in mind, we should be able to take a moment and appreciate the positive development of a record low violent crime rate in black America.

I deal with a lot of people and too many of them are Schmucks. I will list the definition of schmuck and show how economics and the distribution of not only wealth, but, basic resources are wasted by SHMUCKS.The definition of schmuck:

Schmuck, a Yiddish word, has a range of meaning depending on context. In its most innocuous use, a schmuck is a person who does a stupid thing, in which case "dumb schmuck" is the appropriate expression. A schmuck's behavior ranges from pesky and inconsiderate, to obnoxious and manipulative. A schmuck's personality type ranges from jerk to bastard. Schmucky behavior also falls within a range of intentionality. Some schmucks carefully plan their bad behavior, some only a little, and some not at all. For example, the bastard may spend considerable time planning his bad deeds. In contrast, the dumb schmuck and the pesky behave badly without any forethought.

The Schmuck is the type of individual that is the most selfish and conniving scum of the earth. An example of schmuck like behavior is a banker that will lie on paperwork to get someone approved for a mortgage that they know they cannot afford. The Schmuck is also the person who is exhibiting irresponsible behavior and pursuing their dream home that they clearly can’t afford. A Schmuck is the type of person that is always wearing the best most expensive clothing and their kids are hungry and dirty. A Schmuck is an alcohol-based company that will purposely sell a malt liquor that has a chemical that will make you so aggressive that you will “kill your mama” (Dick Gregory).

A Schmuck is a bloodsucker. They suck the life out of all possible situations. They take and take for their own benefit not thinking about the impact on others. A snitch is a schmuck. The type of person that will persecute you for doing the same thing they do. A hypocrite. A Schmuck is the bank that charges all kinds of fees to suck more money out of the people. A Schmuck is the credit card company that will charge 27 percent in interest even if the bill is consistently paid on time. A Schmuck is always the person that brings nothing to the party. They only go to parties where they don’t have to contribute anything. A Schmuck forgets the money they owe and remembers any money they have lent. They are always counting who owes what on the bill trying to figure out how to order the most and pay the least. A SCHMUCK always wants everything to be free.

Also, you must beware of the kind Schmuck. This is the type of person who is nice and sweet, but always has incredible issues. They have bad relationships, bad money management and uncontrollable emotions. They leverage your friendship into an opportunity to keep you on the phone for 6 hours talking about their issues not ever thinking you might be exhausted, sick or busy. You have to stop what you are doing so that you are not accused of being a bad friend or mate. Fuck them! Stay the fuck away from the kind Schmuck. They drain energy as well.

We all have Schmucks in our lives. We have all, at some point, exhibited schmuck-like behavior. But, the true Schmuck is one who chooses to establish their entire life devoted to being the best Schmuck they can be. Stay away from the true Schmuck. Stay away from that person who drains energy and brings no positive energy. Get them out of your life immediately. Remove all schmucks aggressively. It is important if you want to keep your resources, your money and ultimately your peace of mind.

So what happens in a world with less Schmucks. You will have more people focusing on giving. You will have less hungry people with more resources. There would be more people listening and learning about each other. There would be more jobs. We would also have better banks and better customers.

We Love Mild Sauce

There is something about mild sauce. Not bbq sauce, not hot sauce, but, mild sauce. Who ever invented that shit was a damn evil diabolical genious. Think about the sauce. The essence of the sauce stimulates the taste buds from all angles. It's a little sweet, a little tangy and savory all at the same time. What kind of mind altering experience is that!!???

Everyone is familiar with mild sauce. You know if the sauce has been altered. your mild sauce pallet can taste an amateur at work. You will know if it is to salty, to sweet or to tangy. Your tongue will let you know.

The most well known producer of mild sauce is the famous Harold's Chicken Shack. This chicken shack is famous for their mild sauce. This faithful Chicago institution is known for having, for the most part, a consistent tasting mild sauce. You know what you are getting.

Now I'm writing about this mild sauce because I am hungry. There is often nothing more satisfying than a gizzard wing combo with the extra sauce. Oh! I don't like my sauce on the side. I like my extra sauce on the chicken, gizzards and that soggy as piece of bread on the bottom.

It is clear that this sauce has magical powers. I mean it is so good that you could almost pour it on pancakes and go in. Just kidding. OK maybe I would think about it if I were out of syrup.

This sauce does not come with out a price. What I mean is; although it is universally good and cheap, it has a price. It has a high sodium count, a high sugar count and will ultimately contribute to high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.Damn! How can something so good be so destructive?

I think I will pass on Harold's today. Maybe I will eat a salad and drink more water today. I love the sauce and I love what it represents,something so good that it is addictive with out being classified as a drug or narcotic. Too much will definitely cause problems if not consumed with caution.

The idea of consuming with caution makes me think about historically oppressed people in this country. We often have very little access to what makes our bodies whole. We live lives of struggle and survival. So much that when we get a Chance to indulge in what is pleasurable, we over indulge. Ultimately,causing us harm. In some cases serious harm. Harm to our health, finances and overall balance.

Any group of people that has been denied pleasure will over indulge when they get the chance.

Drink to much water and you will drown. Its really about understanding that you can have what you want in abundance.

It is with the understanding of abundance that I will pass on the sweet, tangy and savory mild sauce today. It is with the understanding of abundance that will allow me to drink a moderate amount of water and consume vegetables today. It is with the understanding of abundance that will allow me to know that I don't have to eat the gizzard wing combo today.I can eat it another time. But, for today, I will focus on feeding my body what will nourish it and enhance good overall health and balance.

I love you mild sauce. You will always be my baby. But, I cant fool around with you today. I will see you later baby. Besides; you have enough lovers to keep you company.
